Pat Steir

American, Born 1940

Pat Steir was born in Newark, New Jersey, and currently lives and works in New York City. She holds a Bachelor of Art degree from Boston University and a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Pratt Institute, New York. Steir has received numerous grants and awards including two National Endowment for the Arts grants, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and an honorary doctorate from Pratt Institute. Steir combines interests in Minimal and Conceptual art with Abstract Expressionism and Chinese landscape painting. She was introduced to the Vogels, who collected many of her waterfall paintings, by Sol LeWitt. Her work is in the collections of major national and international museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Collection, London, among many others.
