Loose Leaf Notebook Drawings - Box 15, Group 7

Born in New Jersey in 1941, Richard Tuttle received a B.A. from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut and studied at Pratt Institute and Copper Union in New York City. Tuttle is a prominent figure of the Post-Minimalist art movement of the 1960s and 70s. Tuttle often uses unexpected materials to construct his mixed-media configurations. Though much of his body of work is sculptural, Tuttle refers to these pieces as being more akin to three-dimensional drawings. Instead of focusing on the familiar definition of sculpture by carving wood or molding metal, Tuttle builds small objects out of common and understated items like sticks and string. These examples of his Loose Leaf Notebook Drawings represent only a fraction of his output from this series of explorations of color.
