Message - 21 (Feu)

Drawing: pastel and ink on paper
sheet: 10 1/8 x 10 inches (25.7 x 25.4 cm.)
Date: 1992

"Message-21 (Feu) and Message-22 (Feu) were made in my Paris studio in September 1992. They come from a series of thirty eight Message drawings. The main theme for these Message drawings was the four natural elements: Fire (Feu), Earth (Terre), Air (Air) and Water (Eau). Characteristic of the drawings in this series is the application of the pastel chalk in layers, which creates subtle juxtapositions of darker and lighter areas. Also the lines are sometimes incised after the application of pastel, creating white marks or lines, as the white of the paper is revealed from underneath. This is clearly to be seen in Message-21 (Feu)." Edda Renouf
