Martin Johnson was born in New Jersey, in 1951. He received a degree in Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and an MFA from the University of North Carolina. Johnson relocated to New York City where he was one of the first artists to be given studio space at MOMA’s P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center during the late 1970s and early 80s through the Rooms project. Johnson’s works are assemblages of non-traditional materials, found objects, and text that are intended to create space for the artist’s ideas and for the viewer to develop their own.
