I'm not certain that these are domestic cats. Because they are white, I initially assumed they were house cats, but after some research, I discovered that the artist generally worked in a monochrome palette, and she was known for her images of zoo animals.
In an artist’s statement, Cooke wrote about drawing cats: “The cats are difficult as they have few bones, almost like a sponge…To give them body is very difficult with failures very often.”
Study of Birman Cat
The Birman is a registered breed of cat with blue eyes, light golden fur, and dark points around the face, legs, and tail.
Map Turtle
Map turtles are freshwater, basking turtles distinguished by map-like markings and a pronounced central ridge on their carapaces. Map turtles remain fairly small and typically live between fifteen and twenty years.
Untitled (Vogel living room drawn from memory)
In John Salt's memory drawing, four distinctive cats populate the Vogels' living room. Three lounge comfortably among the art, while a fourth—alert or perhaps alarmed—notices the viewer.
