"Furrows #5 was made in my loft studio in New York City and is one of a series of fifteen Furrow drawings. In these I have explored the organic origin of the cotton fibers with which the paper is made. The vertical grey marks with soft edges are reminiscent of the ploughed furrows of earth, where the cotton plant grew; or of the soft spindles of cotton before it is spun into thread. At the same time, the unevenness of the incised lines reveals the organic energy of the cotton fibers with which the paper is made." Edda Renouf
