Stewart Hitch was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. He received his MFA at the University of Nebraska and moved to New York City shortly thereafter. Hitch was known for his use of colors commonly seen in color field paintings and geometric abstraction. His early pieces focused on star shapes and had a pop art quality. Music influenced his work and many of his pieces were named after songs. The technique of his paintings often included drips and revealed under-marks.
