I'm not certain that these are domestic cats. Because they are white, I initially assumed they were house cats, but after some research, I discovered that the artist generally worked in a monochrome palette, and she was known for her images of zoo animals.
In an artist’s statement, Cooke wrote about drawing cats: “The cats are difficult as they have few bones, almost like a sponge…To give them body is very difficult with failures very often.”
